Explosion Proof Flow Meter: ATEX Certified Sensors for Hazardous Fluid Lines

Quick Answer: An explosion proof flow meter with ATEX certified sensors is mandatory when you move flammable liquids or gases through pipelines in Zone 1 or Zone 2 hazardous areas. Silver Instruments supplies Coriolis, vortex, electromagnetic, oval gear and thermal mass flow meters with full ATEX and IECEx certification for flows from 0.5 kg/h up to 500 m³/h. These instruments deliver 4-20 mA HART outputs, withstand process temperatures from -40 °C to 200 °C, and are used daily on fuel transfer, solvent batching and chemical injection skids.

Oil refineries in the Middle East, chemical plants in Southeast Asia, and paint manufacturers in Latin America all face the same challenge. A single spark from a non-certified flow sensor can ignite a vapor cloud and cause a catastrophic event. This is why site engineers and EPC contractors ask for ATEX Zone 1 or Zone 2 flow meters with the sensor electronics sealed in an Ex d or Ex ia enclosure. Silver Instruments builds explosion proof flow meters in our Nanjing facility and ships them to over 40 countries. The process skips generic approvals and goes straight to the specific ATEX/IECEx certificate number that matters for your local electrical inspector.

Why Hazardous Fluid Lines Need ATEX Certified Sensors

Flammable liquids and gases create explosive atmospheres. Gasoline, ethanol, acetone, toluene, natural gas, and hydrogen all require ATEX certified instruments under the EU ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. In many nations from Vietnam to Nigeria, local codes mirror IEC 60079 standards. Without an ATEX or IECEx certificate plate on the flow meter, the installation cannot get a commissioning signoff. The classification commonly used is Ex II 2G Ex d IIC T4 Gb for Zone 1 gas applications. A sensor that meets this standard uses a flameproof housing. The hot internal components stay inside a chamber that cools escaping gases below the ignition temperature. For Zone 2, an Ex nA or Ex ic design is often enough, but most engineers order the higher Zone 1 rating to standardize spares across plants.

Silver Instruments pairs each flow meter sensor with a remote or integral transmitter that also carries the same hazardous area certification. We do not mix a safe sensor with a non-certified transmitter. That combination fails a HAZOP review. The entire loop from sensor to junction box to control room safety barrier must form a certified assembly. If you send us your P&ID snippet, we can recommend the correct isolating barrier and cable gland type for your ATEX zone.

Flow Meter Technologies with ATEX and IECEx Approvals from Silver Instruments

Different fluids demand different meter principles. All our offerings can be built with sealed, explosion proof sensor housings and certified electronics. Here is a quick reference from real customer orders.

For clean fuels and solvents with low viscosity, a Coriolis mass flow meter model SCF-300 is popular in ATEX Zone 1. It measures mass flow directly in kg/h, density in kg/m³, and temperature via built-in PT100. A recent shipment to a lubricant blending plant in Indonesia used DN15 SCF-300 with 316L wetted parts, Ex d IIC T4 transmitter, and HART output. The flow range was 8 to 800 kg/h for synthetic base oil. No moving parts, no straight pipe requirement.

For steam, compressed air, and process gases, a vortex flow meter model SVM-500 works well in Zone 1. It handles temperatures up to 200 °C and integrates a PT100 for temperature compensation. A Vietnamese chemical company ordered 12 units in DN50 size for solvent vapor recovery lines. Each meter shipped with an Ex ia barrier and a local indicator. The accuracy under fluctuating pressure was 1.0 percent of reading.

For conductive water-based fluids like cooling water with glycol or corrosive chemical solutions, an electromagnetic flow meter m
