Venturi Tube Flow Meter: Fundamental principles of differential pressure in fluid mechanics

Quick Answer

A venturi tube flow meter creates a measurable differential pressure by forcing fluid through a converging throat section. Flow rate is calculated from the square root relationship between differential pressure and velocity. Silver Instruments supplies complete venturi metering packages with DP transmitters and flow computers for steam, gas, and liquid applications.

How the Venturi Tube Produces a Differential Pressure

The venturi tube has three distinct sections: a short converging inlet, a narrow throat, and a long diverging outlet. When fluid enters the converging cone, velocity increases while static pressure drops. This is Bernoulli’s principle at work. At the throat, velocity peaks and pressure reaches a minimum. Pressure taps before the throat and at the throat capture the differential pressure (DP) signal.

The DP signal is proportional to the square of the flow velocity. A transmitter converts this DP into a flow rate using the known geometry of the venturi tube. ISO 5167-4 standardizes the dimensions and calculation. The flow equation includes a discharge coefficient C, which depends on Reynolds number and the beta ratio β (throat diameter divided by pipe inner diameter). Typical β values range from 0.4 to 0.75. A β of 0.6 reduces permanent pressure loss to less than 10 percent of the DP reading. That is one major advantage over orifice plates.

Why Engineers Choose Venturi Tubes Over Other DP Meters

Venturi tubes have low permanent pressure loss and superior accuracy, around ±0.5 to ±1 percent of rate. They handle dirty fluids, slurries, and fluids with solids. There are no moving parts and no sharp edges to wear. In wastewater treatment plants in Australia, many site managers prefer venturi meters over electromagnetic flow meters when pipeline diameters exceed DN 600 because the venturi has no liner to de-laminate or electrodes to foul.

Another practical reason: venturi tubes require very short upstream and downstream straight pipe lengths. A 15D upstream and 5D downstream is often enough. This helps in tight pump stations in the Middle East or offshore platforms in Southeast Asia.

Here is the thing. Most venturi tubes installed in the 1990s are still measuring flow today with zero maintenance. That long service life comes from having no moving parts and a smooth internal profile.

Typical Application Ranges and Material Selection

We have supplied venturi meters with diameters from DN 50 to DN 2000. Materials cover 316L stainless steel, duplex steel for seawater, and carbon steel with epoxy coating for fresh water. For a desalination plant in Oman, we supplied a DN 800 duplex stainless steel venturi tube rated for pr

essures up to 40 bar and temperatures up to 80 °C. The DP transmitter had a range of 0 to 30 kPa, with 4-20 mA HART output and ATEX Zone 1 certification. The whole package included a Silver Instruments DP451 differential pressure transmitter, a three-valve manifold, and a local indicator.

Our venturi meters also work for steam flow measurement in chemical plants. In a recent project for a paint manufacturer in Vietnam, we integrated a venturi tube with a flow computer to compensate for temperature and pressure changes in saturated steam. The customer received a turnkey solution with on-site commissioning support via Zoom.

FAQ on Venturi Flow Meters

What is the minimum straight pipe requirement for a venturi tube?
Typically 10 to 15 diameters upstream and 5 diameters downstream. With a flow straightener, upstream length can drop to 5D. We always check the installation standard ISO 5167-4 during design.

Can a venturi meter measure both liquid and gas?
Yes. With a suitable DP transmitter and square root extraction, the same primary element works for liquids, gases, and steam. You must specify density and compressibility corrections.

How does a venturi compare to an orifice plate in terms of pressure loss?
A venturi tube loses only 5 to 20 percent of the differential pressure. An orifice plate can lose 40 to 80 percent. That translates to lower pump energy costs over the meter’s life.

What does a complete venturi flow meter package from Silver Instruments include?
The venturi tube primary element, a differential pressure transmitter, a 3-valve manifold, impulse tubing, and optionally a flow computer or paperless recorder. We test each assembly at our factory before shipping.

Do you offer venturi tubes for high temperature steam lines?
Yes. We have supplied meters for steam up to 400 °C and 100 bar. We select materials and pressure taps with cooling sections or remote seals to protect the transmitter.
