Magnetic Water Flow Meters: Obstructionless Velocity Tracking for Conductive Fluid Lines

Quick Answer: Magnetic water flow meters, also called electromagnetic flow meters, measure volume flow in conductive liquids. The full bore sensor has no moving part in the pipe and creates almost zero pressure drop. Silver Automation Instruments supplies sizes from DN6 to DN2000 with 4-20 mA HART, pulse, and Modbus RTU outputs for water, wastewater, chemical and food lines in Southeast Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Latin America.

Silver Automation Instruments builds these meters for water utilities, desalination plants, chemical processors, food plants and marine systems. The main advantage is simple. You get reliable flow data without cutting a hole pattern into the pipe or adding a turbine that can jam.

How a Magnetic Flow Meter Tracks Velocity

Inside the sensor, two coils generate a magnetic field across the pipe. Conductive liquid acts as a moving conductor when it passes through that field. Two electrodes pick up a small voltage signal. That voltage is directly proportional to average flow velocity. No moving part touches the liquid.

Because the sensor bore matches the pipe, the meter adds no obstruction. No orifice plate, no turbine blade, no gear. For water and similar liquids this means no clogging and very low maintenance.

The liquid must have a minimum conductivity. For most Silver Instruments meters that limit is 5 µS/cm. Tap water, river water, well water, seawater, brine, acid, caustic and many food products work well. Oils, fuels and most gases do not work because the conductivity is too low.

Typical Field Applications

Municipal water utilities in Vietnam and the Philippines use these meters for raw water intake and treated water output. A customer in Peru replaced a DN200 mechanical propeller meter because river sand caused wear. The magnetic flow meter has no moving part and the PTFE liner handled the abrasive solids. The meter paid for itself in lower repair costs within 14 months.

Wastewater plants often select DN50 to DN600 meters for sludge return lines and aeration basins. The hard rubber liner and 316L electrodes handle solids and chemical dosing. In desalination plants, a seawater flow meter for desalination plant intake lines normally uses titanium electrodes and a PTFE liner. We have delivered these for reverse osmosis projects in Saudi Arabia and Chile.

Food and beverage plants in Thailand and Indonesia use sanitary magnetic flow meters for batching syrups, juice, beer and CIP solutions. Tri-clamp connections on DN25 to DN100 lines simplify cleaning. A seafood processing site in Thailand uses 12 DN40 sanitary mag meters on ice water and brine lines.

Installation Details That Prevent Errors

Use a grounded section of pipe or grounding rings when the line is plastic or lined. Here is the thing. A poor ground creates unstable readings. In practice, most engineers skip this part until the signal drifts.

Keep the meter full of liquid at all times. Air bubbles cause measurement noise. Mount the sensor where the pipe runs full, not at the high point of a line. For chemical injection, add the injection point downst
