Cfh Flow Meter: Measuring Gas and Vapor Capacity in Cubic Feet Per Hour

Quick Answer: A CFH flow meter measures gas or vapor flow in cubic feet per hour. This volumetric unit works well for small and medium gas lines from DN15 to DN150. Silver Automation Instruments supplies inline thermal mass and vortex meters with 4-20 mA HART output, Modbus, and local display.

What Is a CFH Flow Meter

CFH stands for cubic feet per hour. It describes how much gas or vapor passes through a pipe in one hour. Many engineers use CFH for burner gas supply, compressed air audits, nitrogen purge, and small steam lines.

One CFH equals 0.0283168 cubic meters per hour at actual line conditions. One cubic meter per hour equals 35.3147 CFH. This conversion helps when you compare a CFH meter reading with data from a system that uses SI units.

In most industrial settings, a plain CFH reading is only part of the picture. Gas volume changes with pressure and temperature. A change from 1 bar(g) to 3 bar(g) can reduce the actual volume by more than half at the same mass flow. That is why we ask for line pressure and temperature before recommending a meter.

CFH Versus SCFH and Mass Flow

Actual CFH is not the same as SCFH. SCFH is standard cubic feet per hour. It corrects gas volume to a fixed reference condition. Typical reference conditions are 14.7 psia and 60 degrees F, or 101.325 kPa and 20 degrees C.

Because actual CFH depends on pressure and temperature, the same mass flow can show two different CFH values on two different days. That confuses combustion control and billing systems. In practice, we have seen customers compare CFH readings without pressure correction and get errors of 20 to 40 percent.

If your process needs stable gas flow measurement, ask for a thermal mass flow meter. It reads kg/h or Nm³/h directly and does not need external pressure compensation. This works well for air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and natural gas. For steam, a vortex flow meter with a built-in PT100 and pressure transmitter gives a corrected mass or SCFH output.

Gas and Vapor Applications Where CFH Meters Fit

We supply CFH meters to many small and medium industrial sites. A food processor in Vietnam measures LPG flow to a drying oven. Their line runs at 0.8 bar(g) and 25 degrees C, with flow from 300 to 3000 CFH through a DN25 pipe.

A biogas plant in Thailand uses a CFH meter on a DN80 line. The gas is saturated and contains small amounts of hydrogen sulfide. We selected a vortex flow meter for that service because a vortex meter handles dirty gas better than a thermal probe.

Compressed air audits in Chile often need a portable insertion meter. A copper mine in Antofagasta measures compressed air from 2000 to 20000 CFH in a DN100 header. The meter transmits data via Modbus RTU to a paperless recorder.

Steam is another common use. A pharmaceutical site in Malaysia monitors clean steam at 2 bar(g) and 120 degrees C. They use a DN40 vortex flow meter with a PT100 sensor and 4-20 mA HART output. The local display shows kg/h, but the same instrument can display CFH if the density is known.

How to Choose a CFH Meter for Your Line

Start with gas t

ype, pressure, temperature, pipe size, and flow range. These five items decide the meter type and size. For example, a DN50 air line at 7 bar(g) and 25 degrees C with 10000 CFH needs a different meter than a DN15 natural gas line at 0.2 bar(g) and 500 CFH.

Check the turndown ratio. Thermal mass flow meters often provide 100:1 turndown for clean gas. Vortex flow meters provide 10:1 to 20:1 turndown and handle steam, saturated gas, and light particulates. Do not use a thermal probe on wet or dirty gas because coating on the sensor shifts the calibration.

Materials matter too. For wet biogas or landfill gas, use 316L stainless steel wetted parts. For steam above 150 degrees C, a vortex meter with all stainless steel body and no plastic parts is safer. Ask for ATEX Zone 1 approval if the area has flammable gas. Most gas and vapor meters from Silver Automation Instruments can be supplied with ATEX or IECEx certificates.

Silver Instruments CFH Meter Options

Silver Automation Instruments manufactures and delivers inline and insertion flow meters for gas and vapor service. Our thermal mass flow meters cover pipe sizes from DN15 to DN300. They work for air, nitrogen, oxygen, natural gas, LPG, and biogas. Standard output includes 4-20 mA HART, pulse, and Modbus RTU. Local display shows CFH, SCFH, Nm³/h, or kg/h.

Our vortex flow meters cover DN15 to DN300 for steam, compressed air, and industrial gases. They are available with built-in PT100 temperature compensation and pressure transmitter input. Accuracy is plus or minus 1.0 percent of reading for liquids and plus or minus 1.5 percent for gas and steam under proper installation.

Last year a chemical plant in Malaysia ordered a DN40 vortex flow meter for natural gas at 1.2 bar(g). They sent gas type, pressure, temperature, pipe size, and flow range in one email. We sized the meter and shipped it with factory calibration. That is the fastest way to get a firm quote.

FAQ

What is a CFH flow meter?
A CFH flow meter measures gas or vapor flow in cubic feet per hour. It is a volumetric instrument for small and medium gas lines.

Can a CFH flow meter show SCFH or kg/h?
Yes. Electronic models with pressure and temperature compensation can display SCFH or Nm³/h. Thermal mass meters display kg/h or Nm³/h directly.

What is the difference between CFH and SCFH?
CFH is actual volume at the line pressure and temperature. SCFH is volume corrected to a standard condition. Pressure and temperature change actual CFH.

Can I use a CFH flow meter for steam?
Yes. A vortex flow meter with PT100 and pressure compensation works well for saturated and superheated steam. For wet steam, we add a steam quality correction.

How do I get a quote for a CFH flow meter?
Send gas type, pressure in bar, temperature in degrees C, pipe size in DN, and flow range in CFH or SCFH. Contact Silver Automation Instruments by phone at +86-135-1213-1526 or WhatsApp at 86-135-12131526.
