ABB MagMaster Flow Meter: Core Coil and Field Signal Error Diagnostics
Quick Answer
A field signal error on an ABB MagMaster often comes from a failed core coil drive circuit, low coil insulation resistance, or a field wiring fault between the sensor and converter. Before replacing the converter, check coil resistance and coil insulation at the sensor terminal box. If coil resistance is open or insulation is below 20 megohm at 500 VDC, the fault is usually inside the sensor or the field cable.
How the MagMaster Core Coil Works
The MagMaster sensor uses two saddle coils to create a magnetic field across the pipe. The converter sends a controlled excitation current through the coils. Field signal error codes appear when the converter detects that the coil drive voltage or current is outside the expected window.
Most electromagnetic flow meters use pulsed DC excitation. The core coil does not move. It is embedded in the sensor body. Any drift in coil resistance, shorted turns, or moisture ingress changes the field strength and produces unstable readings or a hard fault.
Common Core Coil Faults Found on Site
We have seen the same fault patterns on MagMaster sensors in water plants, chemical dosing skids, and food factories. The root cause is usually one of four issues.
Open coil circuit. The coil resistance reads infinite or far above the typical range. For MagMaster sensors from DN25 to DN300, our service records show cold coil resistance mostly between 30 and 150 ohm. If you measure an open circuit, check the terminal block for corrosion before condemning the coil.
Coil insulation failure. Use a 500 VDC insulation tester between the coil terminals and the sensor body. A healthy dry coil usually reads above 20 megohm. Readings below 5 megohm under humid site conditions often mean water has entered the coil housing or the liner is damaged behind the electrode area.
Wet or corroded junction box. Many MagMaster faults are not inside the coil. Water enters the terminal box through a failed cable gland. The moisture forms a conductive path and the converter reports a field signal error even though the coil is still good.
Wrong field cable or poor shield grounding. Use the original cable type or a low capacitance twisted shielded pair. Ground the shield at the converter end only. Long cable runs, mixed power and signal cables in the same tray, or a damaged outer sheath can cause intermittent field signal alarms.
Field Signal Error Diagnostics in Five Steps
Step 1. Disconnect power and remove the converter from the sensor or remote terminal box. Lock out the circuit at the MCC or local isolator.
Step 2. Measure coil resistance across the coil drive terminals. Record the value and compare it with the factory test sheet for that serial number. If you do not have the sheet, compare it with the other coil pair if accessible.
Step 3. Test insulation resistance from each coil terminal to the sensor body using a 500 VDC insulation tester. Anything below 20 megohm is a warning. Below 5 megohm is a likely field failure.
Step 4. Inspect the field cable, glands, and junction box. Blow out moisture with dry air if needed. Check the shield ground connection at the converter end only.
Step 5. Restore power with the pipe full and no flow. If the field signal error clears, the original issue was a process condition or moisture that has now dried. If the error returns, the sensor or cable has a hard fault.
Process Conditions That Trigger Field Signal Errors
Not every field signal alarm means a broken co

Last year a customer in Vietnam called about a MagMaster field signal error on a seawater cooling line. The meter alarmed only when one pump stopped and the pipe drained back. The coil was fine. The problem was an empty pipe condition during pump changeover. We told the site team to add a drain-back check valve and recheck the empty pipe detection setting.
In practice, we first ask the site engineer whether the pump was running, whether the pipe was full, and whether the fluid temperature changed. A hot CIP cycle in a food plant can pull moisture into a small liner crack. That moisture reaches the coil area later and the fault appears only after the pipe cools.
When to Repair or Replace the Sensor
If the coil is open or shorted to ground, the sensor usually needs to go back to a repair center for coil replacement. That can be expensive and slow for users in Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa, or the Middle East. Many customers compare that repair cost against a new electromagnetic flow meter with local support and a two year warranty.
Silver Automation Instruments supplies electromagnetic flow meters from DN15 to DN300 for water, wastewater, chemical, and food applications. Common outputs include 4 to 20 mA HART, pulse, and RS485. Liners are available in PTFE, rubber, or ceramic depending on the fluid and temperature.
We do not claim to be an authorized ABB service partner. We support users with compatible replacement meters, honest diagnostics, and technical selection. If you send us the serial plate data, coil resistance readings, and process parameters, we can advise whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

FAQ
What does a field signal error mean on an ABB MagMaster? It means the converter sees a problem in the coil drive circuit or field wiring. The cause can be an open coil, low insulation resistance, a wet junction box, or a cable fault.
What is a normal core coil resistance for ABB MagMaster? In our service records, many MagMaster sensors from DN25 to DN300 show 30 to 150 ohm at ambient temperature. Always compare the reading to the factory sheet for your serial number.
Can low coil insulation be fixed in the field? Sometimes yes. If the junction box is wet, dry it out and replace the gland. If the low insulation is inside the sensor body, field repair is not practical. The sensor needs a coil rewind or full replacement.
Why does the field signal error appear only during low flow? At low flow the signal is small. Any coil drive instability, ground loop, or air bubble has a larger effect on the measured signal. Check the grounding rings, cable shield, and pipe fill before replacing parts.
Do you supply a replacement electromagnetic flow meter for ABB MagMaster? Yes. Silver Automation Instruments supplies electromagnetic flow meters with 4 to 20 mA HART, pulse, RS485, and matching process connections. Send your pipe size, pressure, temperature, fluid conductivity, and flow range for a quote.
